This story tackles the typically trite theme of a student falling in love with her professor, yet manages to do so in a surprising and charming way. The narrator has a straightforward way of reflecting on her past that makes you want to start reading it again as soon as you finish.
March 24, 1999ON DECKSan Diego State (15-14; 5-4 WAC) travel to Fort Worth, Texas to battle Texas Christian (15-13; 7-2 WAC) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. SDSU has split its four games all-time against the Horned Frogs, with all four games coming last year. TCU took the first two games of last year's three-game series in Texas, while the Aztecs took the final game, then defeated the Horned Frogs at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in San Diego. At 7-2, TCU is tied atop the WAC standings with Rice and San Jose State. The Aztecs are 5-4 in league play and hold down sixth place in the 11-team conference.HEAD COACH JIM DIETZSDSU head coach Jim Dietz is one of only seven active Division I coaches to have won 1,100 games during his career. Dietz reached the mark on February 20th against Arizona. In his 28th year as the Aztecs' head coach, Dietz has compiled a 1,108-655-8 record. He has guided the Red and Black to three Western Athletic Conference championships, and was named WAC Coach-of-the-Year in 1986 and 1994. Dietz's clubs have cracked the nation's top 25 in 11 of the last 14 years.Among Dietz's former players are San Diego Padre right fielder Tony Gwynn, Chicago Cub first baseman Mark Grace, Arizona Diamondback first baseman Travis Lee and former San Francisco Giant pitcher Bud Black.LAST WEEKSDSU dropped its third straight game by losing to Air Force, 15-7 on Friday in Colorado Springs. The Aztecs gave up 10 Falcon runs in the seventh inning to seal their fate. SDSU starter Aaron Harang pitched six innings of two-run ball entering the seventh, but he yielded eight Air Force runs without recording an out in the seventh before he was pulled. Harang's record dipped to 2-2 overall, and 1-1 in the WAC.The Aztecs were led by sophomore designated hitter Robert Womack, who went two-for-four with a double, a stolen base and an RBI. SDSU junior second baseman Matt Ricardy went two-for-three with two doubles and an RBI in the contest. The loss marked the first time the Aztecs have ever lost to the Falcons in Colorado Springs. On Saturday, SDSU let a two run lead slip away in the bottom of the ninth inning and lost to Air Force, 14-13. The loss was the fourth straight conference defeat for the Aztecs.Trailing, 11-8 through six innings of play, SDSU scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 13-11 lead. Aztec junior third baseman Matt Ricardy doubled in sophomore catcher Brandon Rogers and freshman designated hitter Ben Leuthard to tie the score with two outs in the seventh. Senior second baseman Javier Ramos gave SDSU the lead by doubling in Ricardy. A single by sophomore shortstop Edgar Gonzalez brought Ramos in with the insurance run, but it would not be enough. After Aztec junior reliever Ben Nelson held the Falcons scoreless in the seventh, and sophomore lefty Mike Garber did likewise in the eighth, SDSU brought in senior closer Jeff Dufek. Air Force tied the game with two quick runs off Dufek in the bottom of the ninth, and snatched the win with a bases-loaded single from sophomore first baseman Ryan Carville.Aztec sophomore center fielder Robert Womack led the charge in defeat for SDSU, going four-for-five with two runs batted in and a stolen base, while Leuthard hit the first home run of his collegiate career in the loss.On Sunday, the Aztecs snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating Air Force, 17-9 on Sunday. SDSU fell behind the Falcons early, surrendering three first inning runs. Air Force's lead would be short-lived, however, as the Aztecs exploded for six runs in the top of the second, with junior right fielder Paul Lockhart delivering the big blow with a grand slam. Lockhart enjoyed a career day. The Bellingham, Wash. native went two-for-four with two homers (including a grand slam) and seven RBI. Senior second baseman Javier Ramos tied a school record by hitting three home runs in the game. PLAYING LONG BALLIn Sunday's game against Air Force, the Aztecs tied a school record for most home runs in a game, jacking five balls out of Falcon Field. Making that record more impressive was the fact that it only took two players to tie the mark, as Ramos hit three and Lockhart hit two.ALTITUDE IS A WONDERFUL THINGSDSU's trip to the elevation in Colorado Springs proved to be just what the offense needed. The Aztecs scored 37 runs and knocked out 46 hits in the three games. In SDSU's last seven games prior to last weekend, it scored 38 runs on 69 hits.OFFENSE COMING FROM EVERYWHEREThe Aztecs possess a balanced offensive attack, as evidenced by the fact that SDSU has 11 players (eight of which are regulars) with batting averages over .300.Eight different Aztecs have driven in 10 or more runs, while two of SDSU's players (Paul Lockhart and Edgar Gonzalez) have driven in 20 or more runs.PITCHING STAFF SLUMPINGOn the heels of a five game stretch in which the Aztec pitching staff allowed only 15 runs (3.0 per game), SDSU has surrendered 58 runs in its last five games (11.6 per game)The Aztecs' team ERA has jumped to 6.35 on the year, and opponents are batting .301 against the Scarlet and Black. However, much of that can be attributed to the fact that SDSU has played the number-one team in the nation (Rice) plus three games at altitude (Air Force) during that span.WOMACK-DADDYAfter a slow start to the year, Robert Womack has returned to the form that made him Freshman All-American in 1998. Womack has done well in the leadoff spot in the SDSU lineup, as he leads the squad with a .500 on base percentage. The Fontana, Calif. native ranks second in the WAC in stolen bases with 13. Womack is batting .372 on the year and he leads the Aztecs in runs scored (25) and walks (25). In addition, he ranks second on the squad in hits and doubles. In WAC play, Womack has stolen only two less bases (seven) than all of SDSU's opponents put together.LOCKING UPPaul Lockhart has also been significant contributor to the Aztec offense, batting .345 and leading SDSU with 40 hits, eight doubles, five home runs and 32 RBI.In last Sunday's game against Air Force, Lockhart belted two home runs (one of which was a grand slam) and drove in seven runs. The Bellingham, Wash. native has driven in 11 runs in nine WAC games (1.22 RBI per game).Lockhart ranks second on the club in stolen bases with nine.At one point of the year, Lockhart enjoyed a 25-game hitting streak.DEFENSE IMPROVESAfter committing 49 errors in their first 19 games (2.58 per game), the Aztecs have made 15 errors in their last nine contests (1.50 per game). In those first 19 games, the team fielding percentage was .938. Over the past 10 contests, the team is fielding .962.Those numbers are also reflected in the teams overall fielding percentage (.946) and its percentage in WAC games only (.960).AZTEC NOTESFreshman first baseman Chad Chop has hit in four straight games and 12 of SDSUs last 13 contests. In the last 13 games, Chop has raised his batting average from .188 to .306.Soph infielder Edgar Gonzalez has a modest six-game hitting streak going in which he has batted .385 (10-for-26). Perhaps more importantly, he has not committed an error in the last eight games in which he has played. He appears to have settled down after making 9 errors in his first 17 games.Senior Javier Ramos made the most of his two starts in the final two games at Air Force last weekend. In those two contests, the senior from Holtville went 7-for-11 (.636) with two doubles, three homes runs and seven runs batted in.Catcher Brandon Rogers had a nine-game hitting streak broken in last Sundays game at Air Force. During the streak he went 14-for-32 (.438) and improved his season average from .216 to .319.In his last three appearances, senior righthander A.J. Samadani has recorded 19 strikeouts in 12 innings. He has won his last three decisions including victories over Long Beach State, Rice and Air Force.Soph Robert Womack had a 15-game hitting streak end on March 12, and went the next three games without a hit. However, He broke out of his mini-slump at Air Force where he went 7-for-15 (.467) with two doubles, five RBI and a pair of stolen bases.SCOUTING THE HORNED FROGSTCU (15-13 overall; 7-2 WAC) is coming off a three-game WAC series with New Mexico in which it claimed two victories. However, the Horned Frog hurlers have a 4.74 ERA against WAC opponents.Senior Royce Huffman, who doubles as a punter/punt returner on the TCU football team, leads the Horned Frogs and ranks fourth in the WAC with a .423 batting average. Against WAC opponents, Huffman has posted a .488 average. The 1998 All-America selection has driven in a team-best 25 runs.UP NEXTFollowing the TCU series, the Aztecs will make a stop in Yuma, Ariz. to play an exhibition game against many of the top prospects in the San Diego Padres organization plus a few of the major league stars in a game being billed as the "Stars of the Future" contest. That game will take place on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m. SDSU will then travel to Los Angeles to return to regular season action against the defending College World Series Champion USC Trojans at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30 at USC's Dedeaux Field.
